Today's lesson would mostly have speaking exercises and the main goal was to consolidate the target language of "What do you want?" and to finish an answer with saying "please."

It was also on the agenda to review those main verbs we had already studied in prior chapters of the textbook with classes that had not yet done so.

Moreover, to promote students communicating with each other, we had them ask each other in pairs what they wanted by making the other person's parfait rather than making your own parfait in silence. It would also act as a prelude to the shopping game reserved for the next lesson, lesson 4, instead of performing such an activity in this lesson.

Eigo Note Book 1 Page 41 Lesson 6 Activity 2...The guessing game activity, however, would be done today with any available time left over. We would also try to include a few fun activities such as the keyword game and the ohajiki game.


Our outline for today's lesson:

1. Greetings and Introduction

2. Let's Play: the Ohajiki Game "one more time" (quickly)

3. Let's Play: the Keyword Game

4. Review on verbs: am, like, have, want.

5. Chant "What do you want?"

6. Let's Practice: the fruit names and cut out our fruit game cards (1 page)

7. Let's Practice: asking for fruit

8. Use the CD rom to get the kids to speak up and set some examples for the main activity.

9. Students in pairs can make a parfait for each other using the target language.

10. Play the guessing game with some randomly picked textbooks from a "pile" of them.

11. Finish the lesson with a talk about the shopping game for the last lesson of the Lesson 6 unit.


Well, that sounds pretty straightforward doesn't it? I've kind of added my own heading of Let's Practice in there since it only sounds reasonable that it is what we do in an English lesson.

So far as of November 13, 2009 (the time of this writing),
I've only done this lesson with only one of my schools that is ahead due to holidays, field trips, influenza class closures and the like, and I still have 3 sets of grades to do this with next week.

(Just for you folks who are reading this from abroad and may not know already, Japan does have very high numbers when it comes to student population so we usually have 3 classes per grade in one school.
Also, the max number of students per class for upper grades in most cases is currently 40. The number of grades are from one to six so you can do the math and that's roughly the number of students you will get per school.)

So, I've got about tons of classes left with this lesson which reminds me that I can still use some new ideas on point seven. What I'm thinking of is what I used to do with the lowers grade, those really cute kids from Grades 1-4. Now they are big smartass kids (just kidding! they are really nice kids) so I hope they don't mind me rehashing it again for this lesson.

The theme is fruits and we used to teach this theme all the time for the First Graders. I remember I used to lead them on by bringing in a dark bag, usually made of some material that you can't see through. I would put inside the bag some plastic fruits and some real fruits and ask the kids to tell me what they want.

At this age the language is really simple and just a "Apple, please" would suffice. But it is so hilarious when you take out one from your bag that looks so real. I was lucky I was able to find some really good "fake fruit" at the local 100 yen shop (dollar store) made of styrofoam and some kind of paint. Believe me, you would not be able to tell the difference in a photo and neither could the kids sitting in the back looking at the real thing.

If you can get some, try this in one of your classes...

As you take out the apple from your bag (and don't ever tell the kids or let them see before the lesson what is in your bag!) then just ever so slowly, give it a little whiff, smelling it gently, rub it on your shirt, and just as you are about
to take a bite...wait for the kids to either say something... then you can play the "Is it real or is it a fake?" Game with the kids while practicing the target language at the same time. The point is to get the kids to speak up in front of everyone while standing up at their desks and this activity provides a lot of incentive to do so. Since, they'll have to guess if what it is they have asked for is real or not. Kids love playing this game and they'll usually request for fruit that is in season.

So, starting from Grade 1 I've got kids performing T. L. for me. Lucky me...and lucky you if you can outwit the kids in this kind of game. Remember to bring some real fruit or the game gets boring really quickly. You'll see their eyes pop out when you take a bite out of a strawberry! The plus side is that this game can work with almost every theme as long as it has fruits in it.

Or you could play the "Is this a rock or is this chocolate?" Game
(and of course bring the real choco like a chocolate covered almond and then see what the kids say, take a vote, then say "Let's find out!" pop it in your mouth "quickly"...
and then just say, "Yup, its real chocolate! Yummy!"
Then, you'll see the kids AND the home room teacher's eyes pop out...you gotta love it!)

Well, that's all for today, I've got to go since it is Friday and I do like playing "gulp" once in a while at the local watering hole...know what I mean?

These don't look very yummy but they work just as well since they are in color and the kids seemed to enjoy the activity...;)
