Feelings Flashcards: happy, sleepy, hungry and fine

These are just a set of four flashcards that you can see on page 10. I've used these for a quick review and a pick-up session with the kids students numbers as a warm-up.

Feelings Gamecards - A set of 40

These are a set of 40 gamecards for those images on page 10 of Book 1. I've used these in the second lesson as a review game. We used a game called the "coupling game" in where the kids would be divided into 2 groups and would have to find their partner or person with the same card by greeting and asking each other "how are you?" They must keep the cards a secret so they don't find another partner with the same card so quickly. Once they can make a couple, the pair should bring their cards to the front and do a quick greeting and "how are you?" with the ALT and then exchange the old set for a new set of cards. The HRT will love this game because it gives the ALT, or JET, a chance to speak to all of the kids or at least most of them. Keep the kids rotating and tell them they have to find a different partner the next time around. At this age the boys may not want to pair up with the girls so you'll have to do a little coaxing here.

Numbers 1-10, 20-100 and a little more...

Here are some really plain 1-100 number flashcards. It's a real drag having to prepare these so I hope you find them useful. Also, I've used these to fix the kids' -teen vs. -ty accents and held them up behind the HRT so the kids could say them in English while the HRT could thereafter translate their numbers into English. If the HRT makes a mistake, the kids will of course try to blame the HRT. You should turn that around and tell the kids it is their reseposibility to speak clearly enough for any listener to understand. The HRT might miss this point as well if you don't explain this beforehand. So, mix up these cards: 13, 30, 14, 40, 15, 50, 16, 60, 17, 70, 18, 80, 19, 90. Have the HRT sit on a chair in front of you and post a random card on the blackboard. Tell the kids, "sei-no!" and the kids can have a little accent quiz as the HRT tries to figure out their accent and translate it. Pick-up on those students who are dragging their accents too long on the -ty or those kids that are playing a little joke on the HRT. Moreover, you can show the accent as 13 as oO , and 30 as Oo. The -teen accent goes up, and the -ty accent goes down. Good luck!

I don't like blue. - Flashcards for the chant: "Do you have a (green) cap?"

Here are 2 sets of flashcards that are more for teaching the chant rather than vocabulary although you could use them to teach count vs. non-count nouns with reference to the articles "a" and "an". Don't let the kids say "Do you have 'a' green pants?" "Do you have 'a' blue shoes?" etc. They (the kids) will get stuck on "Do you hava" for everything and may thus continue to sound very glorified about it for the rest of their lives... So, I'll leave it up to the ALTs and HRTs out there to decide whether to burst their bubble.

As for me, I think right around this time the kids are old enough to understand we in the "English World" don't treat all nouns the same. If they ask you why, just tell them "Doraemon" said so. Or you could tell them if you put an 'a' in front of an __s word you might make an 'a __s' out of yourself in front of other people. He he he.... it's just a joke, ok...

Actually, the plural is called "fukusu-kei" in Japanese and "a" or "an" equals 1 so we never put it in front of a pluraled word... "fukusei mono no mae ni, "a" wa iranai desu..." (unless you are using a counter, but mostly only the Grade 6ers can get that). The HRT can save you tons of time if he or she can explain, translate, or review this in one minute or so.

By the way, didn't you already explain about milk, ice-cream, and juice and all that other stuff back in Lesson 4: "I like apples." vs. "I like milk." To simply put it just ask the kids why we don't have an 's' after milk (and hope that some smart kid can figure it out and explain it for you in front of the class). Works for me, and saves me a lot of time. (It's amazing how well kids can understand each other...) Or check that post here at eigonote_book_1_unit_4_lesson_1_archives.html

Remember that the main use of these flashcards are for use with the Eigo Note textbooks. So if you plan to use them with the younger grades in Japan at elementary school, or even in an Eikaiwa, you are not doing anyone any favors, especially the kids. These are part of the Grade 5 and 6 Inernational (English) Studies program.
