Well, for this first unit in the Note what can you really give as a quiz for the alphabet if the kids don't really have a clue. Yes, some kids can of course write the alphabet. But can all of them do it? If the answer is no, then let's try not to leave them behind, shall we? So, why not give them a chance to practice?

For children's alphabet handwriting practicing I always go to this site and its really great and does the job perfectly every time.

On this site you can find many handwriting templates that are ready to print-out and give straight to the kids. They also include 'Kaki-jun' which is the stroke order for writing letters.

The prints letters are a bit dark though so as a little hint you should copy and paste them into a word file then play around with the picture editor to tone them down a bit. These worksheets have to be printed as a webpage and you could tone down your copier levels but you would get more contrast control in MS Word and have it print out as a gray color so the kids can trace them for an assignment before class or give them out as homework if your HRT approves.

Now that the kids have had a little more practice in Lesson 1 it might be time to give a chance to write the alphabet more freely. Now, depending on your schools, the kids may have started "romaji" (Japanese for alphabet characters) practice in Grade 3, 4, or 5, but I hear it usually lasts for a number of lessons at most and it is not generally accepted that the kids have to memorize the alpahbet at the primary school level so don't look too surprised if the kids tell "we've already studied that" but have no idea how to write the alphabet in order.

There is really a lot on this site as far as giving writing practice to kids and the site does branch out into many teaching areas so it is really worth a look.

Verbs-Daily Routines that the kids should remember...

In the .pdf file are two worksheets relating to all the verbs for pages 44 to 47 in Book 2.

I found these really helpful with reviewing the verbs, the "time statements," and having the kids speaking by starting each sentence with "I."

It worked well in combination with the Ohajiki Game. Instead of repeating practice, I would call out the next card, the students would repeat that word first, then ask that word in the question "What time do you...?" repeating or saying it with me, depending on the level of the class. The lucky students who got that ohajki would have to answer the question, but time runs out fairly quickly this way so the Home Room Teacher can pick up one student or just have the kids do junken versus you or the HRT and the loser has to answer the question.

In the case of those verbs which aren't part of a daily routine, we asked the class, "Do you go swimming?" for example. And the student who really does go swimming would say "Yes, I do" and then we would all ask, "What time do you go swimming?" and then that student would answer with "I go swimming at..."

Also, we had the kids use the time left over in the third lesson to practice the A-B conversations in pairs.

This worksheet-script is based on the Let's Listen activity on page 52 in Book 2.

We found the original page in the textbook to be a little confusing while trying to put the actual story events in correct order after completing the listening quiz with the CDrom.

What we basically wanted was a way for the kids to easily relate to the story in preparation for a skit-performance activity. Thus, the skit must have a script as well.

Also, this .pdf item may also work just as well as a worksheet since the students can just as well write in their answers (the audio numbers) into the speech bubbles on the .pdf and it would not really affect the numbered order of the story.

Group member names could be written in as well beside the numbers but I don't think that would be really effective and you might have more succes using page 54 instead. I'm also working on a way to help clarify that page for kids so we won't have to waste more than 5 minutes just explaining how to prepare that page for the skit. That might come in to play as a worksheet also.
